The Gila County Sheriffs Posse - Payson is a Volunteer Non-Profit 501 (C) 3
The Gila County Sheriffs Posse was formed in 1967 to assist the Sheriff and the residents of Gila County.
Sheriff Adam Shepherd is a 40 year resident of Gila County and an Arizona Native. He has over 30 years of progressively responsible law enforcement experience in Gila County. He advanced in Command through the ranks as field deputy, narcotics officer, detective, field sergeant, lieutenant-district commander and finally as the Undersheriff where he was responsible for all field and detective law enforcement services in the GCSO, Sheriff Shepherd graduated from Pima Community College, Northern Arizona University and Northwestern University School of Staff and Command. He has served as a certified paramedic, general instructor, firearms instructor, baton instructor and as lead instructor on GCSO computerized systems. He earned a commercial pilot's license with multi-engine and instrument ratings. He is a certified diver and member of the Sheriffs Office underwater dive team and was instrumental in implementing the GCSO policy through Lexipol.
* Secure Crime Scenes
* Assist Detectives
* Assist Sheriffs Deputies and the Department of Public Safety with traffic control
* Assist the Forest Service
* Assist the Payson Police department
* Assist Rural Fire Departments
* Maintain Road Blocks for snow, flood or fire emergencies
* Provide prisoner transports
* Assist with Roosevelt Lake boat patrols
* Provide Security and Traffic control at Civic Events
* Assist with Funeral Escorts
* Provide personnel assistance for Emergency Command Posts
* Assist other agencies (S.A.R., C.E.R.T. etc) with Search and Rescue Operations
* Represent the Sheriffs Office in Parades and other Civic functions
* Provide Assistance to the Sheriffs Communications Center
* Provide County wide "Fire Watch" patrols during Fire Restrictions
* Any other support that may be requested by the Sheriff and Deputies of Gila County
Application to the Posse is open to any resident (male or female) of Northern Gila County (GCSO District 3) who are 18 years of age or older. Applicants must be of good moral character and who are loyal citizens of the United States of America.
Applications must be submitted in writing by completing the "State of Arizona - Gila County Sheriffs Office Employment Application.
Applications can be obtained in person at the Sheriffs Office or by downloading the application directly from this website.
Applications received will be reviewed individually by a review team consisting of three (3) Sheriffs Posse Board Members. the applicant will then be contacted to arrange a time and place for a personal interview with the Board.
Upon successful return of the application from completing a NCIC background check the applicant is required to attend a minimum of three (3) monthly "General" meetings before being sworn in.
A one time fee of $50.00 which includes the first years dues of $25.00 must be collected in advance of the applicant being sworn in.
New Members are placed on a Probationary Status for one (1) year.
